Nigeria has 12 of the turboprops on order with the specialised work carried out by Sierra Nevada. They are planned to be delivered next year. Nigeria has said previously that the new fleet will be used against Boko Haram and ISIS militants that are operating in the south of the country.
“SNC and our partner, Embraer, are certain the Nigerian air force will be pleased with these aircraft,” said Ed Topps, vice president tactical aircraft systems at Sierra Nevada . “It met or exceeded all the requirements and we are very pleased with the successful flight.”
Embraer’s chief executive of the defence and security division, Jackson Schneider, described the event as “an exciting milestone” for the project. “The Jacksonville production line is active, and Embraer and Sierra Nevada look forward to seeing these aircraft continue to roll off the line in the coming months,” Schneider said.
